Xerox Diversity Essay Xerox views achieving diversity in its workforce as a tool to increase its competitive advantage, rather than as an obstacle. Xerox is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE) and applies these principles to its recruitment, selection and retention strategies. To promote cultural and racial understanding and to achieve diversity at all levels of the company, Xerox has implemented a number of programs: Balanced Workforce Strategy, Corporate Champions, Caucus Groups, Training and Development, CEO Roundtables and Work Life. The Balanced Workforce Strategy is a plan to review the companys representation of minorities and females in each pay grade band and to improve its recruitment of qualified individuals into areas where they may be under-represented. The Corporate Champions Program offers different racial and ethnic minorities the opportunity to voice their concerns to corporate officers. This program educates the senior management on diversity issues and builds linkages within the company. Caucus Groups work to create pools of qualified, successful employees who can rise up through the management ranks. The groups also serve as employee advocates, sources of self-development and tools for education and communication. Training and Development are keys to success for all employees at Xerox. The company has identifies 23 leadership attributes as a basis for management development. These attributes also define what is needed for effective business leadership. The Xerox Management Institute provides traditional classroom-based programs and develops new approaches in organizational learning. Next, CEO Roundtables create opportunities for the CEO to gain insight into the status of cultural diversity directly from employee groups. This serves as a communication tool for both the management and the employees with regard to the companys diversity issues. Work Life Programs at Xerox ensure that the workforce has the tools and flexibility it needs to achieve success. The company recognizes that many outside factors influence work behavior and in response, provides programs such as Dependent Care Fund, Alternative Work Schedules, Adoption Assistance, Mortgage Assistance and partial pay replacement for FMLA leaves. The company also offers a Childcare Subsidy, a Childcare Resource and Referral Service, an Employee Assistance Program and an Education Assistance Program. In addition, Xerox has also developed a toolkit entitled, Who Am I? Who Are You? Raising Children in a Diverse World. This toolkit helps adults have more effective discussions with children about issues surrounding diversity. By working with their children, adults become more in touch with their own attitudes about cultural diversity. The toolkit raises cu ltural awareness and sensitivity, and increases appreciation for differences. Outcomes and Significant Accomplishments Xeroxs efforts to improve and maintain corporate diversity is a part of its corporate plan and is supported by its senior management. Xerox diversity programs help the company meet its responsibilities as an EOE employer. In 1997, Xerox had full employee support for its Diversity Network. Plans for its diversity trainings were finished in 1997. Also in 1997, Xerox worked with other corporations, including Honeywell, to benchmark their diversity initiatives. Xerox participated in Catalysts national survey of 1,700 women-of-color managers, entitled Women of Color in Corporate Management: Dynamics of Career Advancement. Catalyst works with businesses to help advance women. The survey was conducted from November 1997 through January 1998. Xerox also co-sponsored a CEO Diversity Summit with the Ford Foundation.

"The time will come when mankind will curse the name of Los Alamos and Hiroshima (Hawkins 1983 260-261)." When nuclear weapons were first discovered back in the 1940's, no one knew the force they were going to have on the world. Many lives were taken when the United States of America dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These lives could have been saved if the communication between the United States and Japan were better. Those bombs should never have been dropped. Even the scientists, who were part of the Manhattan Project thought this. Ever since the start of nuclear exploration people have feared the out comes that came from nuclear development. Albert Einstein, a German born theoretical physicist, who was living in Germany at the time Hitler came into power. Albert Einstein, Edward Teller, Leo Szilard and the rest of his team members wrote a letter in August 1939 to the United States to warn them that Germany was researching and developing nuclear weapons. The scientists were afraid that once Germany finished building the bomb, they would use it on the United States. The United States during the 1930?s was interest in making a weapon that was so powerful that it would be feared by the world. The United States government establishes a top secret plan called the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb. The Manhattan project was the first quest for nuclear weapons. The Manhattan Project took place in they United States, during World War II and its purpose was to create a bomb by splitting atoms apart. This project was a success and created one of the most destructive bombs ever used by mankind, the atomic bomb. The presid ent at the time, Harry S. Truman, had to face the factors that were involved in making the decision to drop the bomb. By July 16, 1945 the United States government had tested the bomb in New Mexico. The United States Wanting to bring the war to an end with Japan decided to do what was to be one of the most deadly bombing in human history. Then on August 6, 1945 under the authorization of President Harry S, Truman the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese. The bomb hit the city of Hiroshima were it caused great destruction to the city and surrounding area. It has been reported that many civilians were killed and injured during the bomb attack.

Introduction In this investigation I am investigating if varying the amount of sugar solution or distilled water determines the concentration of cell sap. I will do this by using different concentrations of sugar solution and distilled water. If the medium is hypotonic — a dilute solution, with a higher water concentration than the cell — the cell will gain water through osmosis. However if the medium is isotonic —a solution with exactly the same water concentration as the cell — there will be no net movement of water across the cell membrane. If the medium is hypertonic — a concentrated solution, with a lower water concentration than the cell — the cell will lose water by osmosis. Investigation variables To have a controlled reliable investigation I will control the following variables: To try my best to do the experiments at the same room temperature. I will prepare the carrots in the same way because any minor changes can ruin the experiment. The mass of the carrots is a dependent variable and this terminology means that the piece of carrot will be measured constantly throughout the experiment. I will measure in grams, in addition the piece of carrot will be measured before and after it is put into the solution, this will allow us to see if any osmosis has taken place. Fourthly the volume of the solution which the carrot pieces are put in must be same for all of them for example all of them should be covered in what is supposed to be covered in. Also I am going to use the same set of scales to measure the carrot pieces in the solution. This is because measurements may vary between the scales. I did this in a lab so everything was under control to make my results very reliable. My hypothesis I predict that the less sugar solution we use the higher the concentration of the cell sap would be. Plan First I will take some xylem cells from inside of the carrot and some phloem from the outside of the carrot I will take 15 samples of each type of cell from each carrot I will put 3 samples in each solution I would then leave it for 1 hour Then I would reweigh its mass Then plot these results onto a graph And then where the line crosses 0 is the concentration of the cytoplasm Conclusion As I conclude I can say that in my investigation I found out that the more sugar solution you cover in the carrot piece the higher the concentration of cell sap would be and there would be more osmosis activity. However what does mystify me is what you can see above, the two outliers because they don not surprisingly fit with the others but I am sure that if we do this investigation again there would be two outliers or less.

When I visited my Aunt in Concord not too far outside of the San Francisco, I accompanied her in buying a present at Toys R Us for her daughter s 8th birthday. When entering the store it gave a very exciting and bright atmosphere. The colors were very vibrant with shelves upon shelves of different types of toys. The colors at the front seemed to have a combination of all the different colors and seemed to keep a neutral environment. The store had many places for kids to wonder such as a video game section, different toy sections that were separated into types of toys, and the older kid sections which included bikes, scooters, tri-wheelers, and push carts which were just for the parents to use to push their toddlers around. For the bigger toys in these sections, I noticed that the toys meant for boys had many toys that suggested they should pretend to be different super heroes. In this section even though many heroins had similar colors to the men, there were no girl super heroes in this section despite having many batman and superman toys. When walking into the girl isles of the toy store, the type of toys completely changed. When walking in the isles I noticed that the colors obviously changed to pink and purple. The type of toys in these isles completely contrasted the toys meant for the boys. Toys meant for girls usually comprised of barbie dolls, flowers, and many color books of princesses. Most toys in this section suggested tea parties and playing house. Many of the toys also promoted little girls to wear aprons and to bake cookies and other meals for fun. Many nations around the world hold the view that democracy with capitalism offers an efficient use of government resources, which yields the greatest resources for the entire population. However, in an age when free markets are unregulated, issues are raised for the role of government. Other nations have adopted different forms of government, such as communism. This system of government collapsed; one of the reasons being that it did not fundamentally match human nature, leaving democracy as the superior form of government.
